Year 9 Licence to Cook
This module of work will be following the Government Initiative ‘Licence to Cook’ to help improve the diet of teenagers, and stem the increase in obesity from students eating an unhealthy diet.
Opportunities will be provided for the following:
1) Students to have hands-on experiences with food, i.e.: cook;
2) Learn about and gain confidence in basic food hygiene and preparation skills;
3) Learn about healthier eating through practical food work;
4) Apply simple budgeting skills to food choices they make;
5) Work independently and in small groups to develop a wider understanding of wider needs;
6) To become a better informed consumer.
7) There will be (two) three one hour lessons per cycle. The majority of ingredients will need to be purchased and
bought in from home, along with suitable containers for practical lessons.
Year 10 Food Technology GCSE
The aims of this course are:
1) To develop and improve practical cookery skills
2) To improve the students’ knowledge and understanding of the different uses of food as a material
3) To give students knowledge as to why food hygiene safety and storage are very important if people are to have safe food to eat
4) To have a better understanding of peoples dietary needs and how these may vary according to age and dietary requirements
5) To have an understanding of the need for planning and organisation when carrying out food practical and project work

Year 10 Textile Technology GCSE
This course will enable students to develop their ideas of the use of textile design. Students will have the opportunity to explore the areas of fashion and textiles in the home.
Units of work include:
1) Fibres
2) Fabrics
3) Enhancement of fabrics and Fashion
Using theoretical and practical experience, the students will study design needs, fibre classification, construction and maintenance techniques, embroidery techniques / computerised design, the influence of fashion, advertising and the media, correct choice and use of tools.
