Harlington Upper School

French

The department offers courses in French, German and Spanish at GCSE level. Our aims in Years 10 and 11 are:-

- To develop the ability to use languages effectively for purposes of practical communication;
- To form a sound base for the skills, language and attitude required for further study, work and leisure;
- To offer an insight into the cultures and civilisations of French, German and Spanish speaking countries;
- To develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning;
- To provide intellectual stimulation and enjoyment.

A qualification in a Modern Foreign Language is an asset for any student in the current job market as it opens up opportunities in business, travel, tourism and other spheres. A GCSE qualification is particularly important for those thinking about A/S and A2 level exams and university entry.

The examinations taken will demand considerable oral and aural skills, together with competence in understanding and (particularly for those aiming for the higher grades A*-C) writing the language.

A) Listening, both for gist and detailed understanding;

B) Speaking;

C) Reading (with similar aims to A) above);

D) Writing the language.

A very wide range of other authentic materials is also used.
