The Modern Foreign Languages department offers courses at KS3, KS4 and KS5 in both French and German. The main course followed in French is Metro and in German we use Logo. Students are assessed on a regular basis throughout the year. In year 9 students can choose to study either language (or both) and to carry on in year 10 to a GCSE qualification at the end of year 11. Last year in French 70% of students achieved a grade A*-C and in German the figure was 69%. As in the past these figures meet or are greater than the respective national figures for GCSE. We offer opportunities for trips and other extra-curricular activities and our year 9 trip to France in November has been a great success for a number of years now. This year for the first time a number of our year 9 groups are having support from a sixth form mentor and this programme is proving to be successful.
The Business Studies Department at Harlington Upper School offers a range of courses designed to suit students of all abilities. We provide courses that are both vocational and academic in nature. Year 9 can opt for an enrichment course designed to introduce them to enterprise skills. GCSE Business and Communication Systems and BTEC Business (Year 12) are skills based courses. Alternatively students can follow an academic route by studying Business Studies at GCSE and A Level. We also offer Economics at A Level. We encourage students to learn outside of the classroom by following the business news, attending conferences and entering nationally organised competitions. We hope they will develop a genuine interest and understanding of the business world.
