Students selecting this option will explore how and why the Mass Media plays such an important role in our lives.

The study of the Mass Media revolves around four key concepts: Media Audience, Representation, Language and Industry. Under each key concept a range of exciting and engaging historical and modern areas of Mass Media will be explored considering social, historical, political and cultural associations which will include analysing ‘relevant and hot’ topics in:

  • Newspapers and Magazines
  • Television Dramas
  • New Media Technologies
  • Advertising and Marketing
  • Film
  • Music
  • On-line Blogging
  • Video Games

All students will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of the role of the Mass Media in society. They will be expected to discuss and evaluate a range of media texts and to develop skills in media production techniques.

The Practical Activity

Students will be given the opportunity throughout the course to create different forms of Media. This will allow them to build up their knowledge and skills on how to create a successful and creative piece of Media.

For their final piece, students will have the freedom to explore their creative side by creating a music video or a two minute scene from a TV Drama or they can create a print piece for example, a front cover of a magazine, a front page of a newspaper or a poster advertising a film. Students can star in the footage or use friends/family, they can also use their own photography for their print piece or on-line images.

We have a range of fabulous equipment to help students create outstanding pieces of work. This is all supported by high-tech software to upload and edit their final productions into professional and engaging forms of Media.
